ABOUT THE INSTUTUTE
The 2011 Summer Institute on pK-12 Chinese Language Teaching – formally the Summer Training Class for Chinese Language Teachers – is designed to help local schools in Northern California improve the quality of Chinese language teaching and prepare qualified teachers for today and tomorrow. The program is attentive to the demands for teaching and learning the Chinese language and culture, knowledge and skills, and achievement of essential teaching-and-learning outcomes. The curriculum reflects the latest research on practices that help all trainees to enhance their teaching.
Institute Goals
Through 2011 Summer Institute, Confucius Institute at SF State has articulated a set of “principles of excellence” for 21st century Chinese language teachers. The first principle is to “Aim High with Confidence”. This Institute helps participants achieve inclusive excellence, advancing toward their goals for success in teaching Chinese language and culture in their schools. Building on research and previous experiences, the Institute addresses four broad goals
Ø To train sufficient qualified teachers to meet the burgeoning demand for learning Chinese language and culture in Northern California
Ø To help trainees remain informed about the latest development in methods and teaching strategies
Ø To expand trainees knowledge and abilities to ensure excellence in teaching
Ø To deliver lectures on critical topics of pedagogy or methodology for pK-12 Chinese language teachers to promote student learning
Curriculum
Nine-day intensive training courses from June 18 through June 26 at SFSU will focus on:
Ø pK-12 Chinese language pedagogy in the U.S.
Ø California State Chinese language content standards
Ø Classroom management & school culture
Ø Knowledge of Chinese language and teaching skills
Ø Technology and resources for teaching Chinese in the U.S.
Ø Teaching culture in Chinese language classroom
Ø Chinese lesson design and lesson planning
Institute Faculty
Ø Professors from universities in the U.S. and China
Ø Senior and experienced Chinese language teachers
Ø Experts in world language education & teacher training
Trainees
Ø Chinese language teachers at K-12 schools
Ø Chinese language teachers at weekend/evening schools
Ø School teachers in Northern California
Ø Those who want to teach Chinese in the U.S.
Registration
Ø Early Bird (on or before March 31, 2011) registration fee: $80
Ø April 1 or later registration fee: $100
Ø Student registration fee: $50 (Proof of enrollment is required.)
Ø Free for those teachers who helped host new YCT/HSK in their schools in 2010.
Ø Registration Deadline: May 30, 2010
