Head of School

Overview
A private Mandarin immersion not-for-profit school in a dynamic Pacific Northwest metropolitan area is seeking an experienced leader to serve as Head of School. The Head of School will lead an academically rigorous K-5 program that graduates students who are bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural in Chinese and English. For nearly a decade we have offered an intellectually rigorous education that challenges our students to develop their full potential academically and socially.

Job Responsibilities
The Head of School will lead all aspects of the school’s education program and operations including:
  • Serve as an instructional leader to oversee all aspects of a rigorous, engaging, and innovative education designed to meet the school’s goals, including curriculum, assessment, technology, and instructional practices
  • Embody, manifest, and advocate the mission of the school
  • Oversee daily operations of the school; maintain a safe, secure, and well-functioning facility; and comply with relevant federal and state standards, regulations, and documentation requirements
  • Recruit, hire, manage, and develop talented and dedicated educators, administrators, and support staff who are committed to the school’s mission
  • Handle all matters regarding employment, retention, and dismissal of personnel; salaries and contracts; and orientation, training, and employee handbooks
  • Assure academic and professional accountability through professional development, internal teacher observation, and annual benchmarking of student proficiency in Mandarin and English
  • Lead ongoing internal review of curriculum materials to assure the highest degree of educational support possible in pursuit of the school’s stated objectives
  • Be an active member ex officio of all standing committees of the Board, keeping the Board informed of the school’s operation
  • In conjunction with the Board of Directors, manage all resources of the school; maintain a balanced budget; plan for future needs; participate in marketing and long-term strategic planning; and grow the school via increased enrollment
  • In conjunction with the Board of Directors, review and implement school policies and make recommendations for change when needed
  • Foster a vibrant multi-cultural school community aligned with the school’s values
  • Maintain an open, supportive, and engaged culture among the parent community
  • Cultivate community partnerships, including with local businesses, neighborhood organizations, social services, and health agencies

Qualifications
  • Proven educational experience in a leadership role with demonstrable academic results
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a dynamic and academically rigorous Mandarin immersion educational program
  • Expertise in immersion and elementary education pedagogy and best practices; experience with Mandarin language education is essential
  • Extensive knowledge of formative assessment of student progress and use of data to inform classroom practice
  • Ability to attract, select, and develop highly effective teachers
  • Experience with school finance and operations, especially growing private schools
  • Native or near native fluency in Mandarin Chinese
  • Demonstrate English Language proficiency to allow for communication with parents
  • Entrepreneurial passion and an ability to thrive in the excitement and ambiguity of high-growth environment
  • Superb interpersonal skills and an ability to work collaboratively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and multi-tasking skills

Minimum Educational Level: Masters or Ph.D. in relevant area preferred
Experience Required
  • 4+ years professional teaching experience, preferably in immersion or foreign language
  • Professional experience as a department leader, administrator, or executive

The Chinese Studies Program (http://chinesestudies.ucsd.edu/), the Institute of Arts and Humanities and the Department of History within the Division of Arts and Humanities at UC San Diego are committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, student body. Applications are being accepted for one full-time Unit-18 Lecturer position for the Chinese language program. Primary duties for the instructor position are modern Chinese courses at various level as assigned. Employment start date is July 1, 2016, however the fall quarter begins on September 19, 2016 and the candidate must be available to participate in training prior to the start of the Fall Quarter at UC San Diego. This employment opportunity is for a one-year appointment (2016-2017) but may result in a renewable appointment at UC San Diego.

Required Qualifications:
• Applicants must have an M.A. or higher degree in Chinese language pedagogy or relevant fields.
• Qualified candidates must have native command or native-level speaker in Mandarin Chinese and English. With strong oral and written communication skills in both languages including writing in Traditional and Simplified characters.
• Extensive experience as a language instructor at a college level is required and the ability of teaching all levels of Chinese language courses. With a preference to candidates that have five years or more of experience teaching Mandarin Chinese at the college level, which can include time as a teaching assistant.
• Expertise of Chinese customs and culture.
• Ability to plan and implement creative, hands-on and engaging lessons at various levels.
• The ability to supervise and train graduate students as teaching assistants in a Chinese language learning environment.
• Legal authorization to work in the U.S.A. and/or eligible for a visa to work in the U.S.A.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Effective use of technology for teaching, student projects and documenting curriculum is preferred.
• Commitment to student-centered and multicultural education
• Knowledgeable of effective techniques for classroom management
• Knowledge of evaluation and assessment of student progress.
• The preferred candidate will have experience or a willingness to participate in teaching, mentoring, research or service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. And overall demonstrated strong leadership in an academic setting.
• The successful candidate is expected to have worked with existing faculty to design and develop content-based courses, thematic-based courses and/or Chinese language for special purposes and will continue to do so as a member of the Chinese Studies Program.

Part-Time Lecturer in Chinese

The Department of Comparative Literature and Foreign Languages at the University of California, Riverside, is recruiting for a lecturer position in Chinese during Winter and Spring Quarters 2016, pending final budgetary and enrollment approvals.

Duties will consist of the instruction of three (3) sections total. One section of Chinese-1 during Winter Quarter, and one section each of Chinese-2 and Chinese-3 during the Spring Quarter.

A completed Masters degree in Chinese or a related discipline is required. Priority will be given to candidates with substantial experience in teaching Chinese at the university level. Present Lecturer salary per course is $6,126.50. Winter quarter instruction begins Monday January 4, 2016 and Spring Quarter instruction ends June 10, 2016.

Delaware Department of Education

The Delaware Department of Education has an immediate opening to support the increasing number of Chinese immersion programs across the state.  The Chinese Immersion Field Agent is a full-time position in the Language Acquisition Workgroup in the Teaching and Learning Branch at the Delaware Department of Education. Major responsibilities include providing regular and on-going coaching, curricular, and instructional support for Chinese immersion teachers and administrators across the state.

Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor’s Degree in immersion education, in Chinese language, or in elementary education with advanced-level language proficiency in Chinese.  Three (3) years relevant work experience in elementary classroom teaching, immersion teaching, or elementary world language teaching is required.

The Urban School of San Francisco seeks an energetic, creative teacher of Mandarin Chinese to teach one semester-equivalent Chinese 2 course during the Spring Term (March 15 – June 9 2016). The ideal candidate has at least an undergraduate degree in Chinese, teaching experience at the secondary or post-secondary school level, and native or near-native fluency. The candidate should demonstrate enthusiasm for working with high school students, an understanding of their language acquisition needs, and comfort and familiarity with the use of technology within and beyond the classroom.

This part-time position includes the opportunity to participate fully in the Urban teaching community, collaborate with colleagues on curriculum development and pedagogy and benefit from Urban’s professional development program.  All Chinese classes are taught in an intensive, seminar-style format that lasts twelve weeks (the equivalent of a semester).
